An Inside Look Into The Daily Life Of A Women’s Wear Manufacturer

Apparel manufacturing is not a one-person job. However, it is still a business that can be run by one person with the help of qualified and trained staff. So, how does one do it? How does a manufacturer/owner run a manufacturing unit?

Firstly, there are several steps involved, and the overall processes are subject to change based on different factors. But to help you get a realistic look into the various roles and responsibilities a manufacturer has to take throughout the day, let’s take a closer look at their daily routine.

A Day in The Life of Apparel Manufacturers

The morning routine starts with opening the shop. Right from a small, humble manufacturing unit based out of a single floor to a major factory that’s spread across a large area, it all starts with opening up shop. The first thing on the list for manufacturers at the start of the day is ensuring all equipment is working properly and does not need repairs.

Once the checks are complete, the teams come in and take their daily assignments. After the team assignments are done, special care is taken to ensure all the raw materials required to start the day’s work are of the appropriate quality. This quality control done at the start of the day ensures that the garments manufactured on that day are not cancelled at the end due to quality issues.

The last part of the morning routine would involve having a meeting with the supervisors to ensure that the staff and any management issues are taken care of before the start of the workday. While this may not be a practice for many manufacturers, a supervisor meeting at the beginning of the day helps set goals and ensure that there’s proper information about the daily targets among all relevant team members.

After the team meeting, it was finally time for manufacturing processes to start. The first process that begins is fabric cutting. However, the fabric is inspected for flaws and faults before this process begins. Thanks to technology, both these processes are now automated and extremely quick. Automated fabric inspection machines ensure the fabric quality is at par with all your requirements, and laser cutting tools ensure there’s minimal fabric wastage.

Once the fabric is cut and ready, the assembly line is ready and prepared for sewing the cut pieces together and assembling the garment one piece at a time. Once the garment is sewn and ready, the quality inspections follow next after lunch. If the garment passes all the tests, it is then sent over for packaging and labelling. A packed order is prepared for the trucks to take out by the end of the working day.

After the manufacturing process is complete, a manufacturer sits with its team to discuss improvement strategies and the goals for the next day. They also spend time talking to clients and discussing the shipping arrangements and order status. The last thing in the itinerary of a manufacturer is to do a check of their inventory. Every ready and packed garment is accounted for and manufacturers ensure that the inventory is updated and ready for any order dispatches.

And that’s it, this concludes the day in the life of a manufacturer. The actual last step is closing shop, which refers to shutting down the factory and going home. The workday of a manufacturer can last somewhere between eight to nine hours for experienced manufacturers with a well-settled team. However, for most the workdays go beyond the working hours mentioned above and can be closer to 12 to even 14 hours a day of hard work to make sure a business is able to perform and deliver as per its requirements.
